How to make your skin healthy for the sun

New Scientist article New York: In the 21st century, people want to look healthy.

So, to that end, some skin care products are made from plant-based ingredients, but others aren’t.

And while some skin types are prone to acne and skin sensitivities, others are more susceptible to the effects of environmental factors such as pollution.

To find out which products are safe and which ones are not, we surveyed people and looked for evidence of the types of ingredients they use. 

We used a standard skin-care formulation, so it’s not like we’ve been mixing plants and animal fats together in some sort of experiment, said researcher David W. Brown of the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor.

It’s not a perfect science, but it’s better than nothing. 

One thing we can say with certainty is that most products are derived from the skin-sensitive skin types. 

In fact, the skin types most often cited as being affected by pollution are the oily, dehydrated skin types, Brown said.

And the ones with the highest rates of allergic reactions are those who live in coastal areas.

“The skin is more sensitive than most other parts of the body,” Brown said, but that’s not to say it’s immune. 

“I think it’s really important to be aware of what is in your skin,” said Lauren L. DePier, an associate professor at the University at Albany in upstate New York and author of the book The Skin Health Guidebook.

“I think what people are looking for in their skin is to have a healthy, soft, and elastic skin that’s hydrated and that doesn’t dry out,” DePiers said. 

So, what are some of the most common skin-related problems you may see? 

There are plenty of potential triggers for eczema, psoriasis and ecziness.

“One of the main ingredients in many of the products that we are looking at is the animal fat,” De Pier said.

“That is a very potent agent for these skin types and it can be found in animal products such as cheese, meat, butter, etc. Some of the ingredients in these products are also high in saturated fat, which is also linked to heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, among other conditions. 

But what are the risks? 

If you use one of the synthetic plant-derived ingredients, you may be exposed to more of the same chemicals that you might encounter in the natural skin care, De Piers said, and some products might contain pesticides, heavy metals, and other contaminants. 

“So if you want to avoid sunburn, be sure to use a sunscreen that’s rated SPF 15 or higher.””

You can always try to change your skin type by using a sunscreen with an SPF of 15, but this isn’t always possible,” De Wier said, adding that your skin will still be more sensitive to the sun.
