Why is the French army leaving?

The French army is leaving France after more than a decade, leaving behind its ageing tanks and heavy weapons.

The French government said it would also be abandoning some bases in Africa.

France is leaving the European Union.

It said the French Defence Ministry would remain in place in a separate body, the Defence Force, and would be able to recruit and train soldiers.

France is also abandoning its military headquarters in London, which was opened in the 1980s by former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and is considered to be the heart of the French military.

The French army says it will be leaving for Africa to join a multinational force with the African Union.
